The Trials and Tribulations Of Michael Collinson
Out up and early today, off to watch Josh play football v Hepworth, near Holmfirth. The rain seems to have blown over but it still doesn’t look too appealing out there! Very windy and cold I expect too, especially stuck on the touchline, half way up a hill. Hope it’s worth it and they get a much needed win.

11 Nov 20091 day in and the servers for the epic new Modern Warfare 2 appear to be down. For me on my PS3, the online is stucj at “Connecting To Matchmaker Server”. The blogosphere is speculating this is all due to the latest patch which was released to fix an entirely separate problem.
Has anyone else been affected by this?
UPDATE
It appears a patch is due this Friday. Big screw up me thinks.
UPDATE 2
Some people are saying this was a temporary server problem and it’s now resolved. Can anyone confirm?

8 Nov 2009My new receiver came yesterday, the Spektrum SR3500 2.4Ghz micro receiver. It costs £60+, which is as much as the original Micro-T cost me in total!! I’ve been very reluctant to part with that kind of money for one part of such a small car, but, bearing in mind the amount I’ve already spent on it and it was undriveable with the Losi 27Mhz transmitter (upgraded for the brushless conversion) I had to give it a try.
By and large, it’s solved most if not all of my problems. The steering is now rock solid, and interference free. I still intend to upgrade the servo to the SM22 at some point but for now, it’s fine. The only problem I now seem to have is the damn thing cutting out every so often. I don’t know if thats down to the ESC overheating or not but it is quite annoying. I’m on the smallest gear, so I don’t know what to do next to resolve it.
Anyone got any ideas?

6 Nov 2009Since I upgraded my Micro-T to brushless, it’s never worked properly. The radio side of things was just so full of interference, the steering didn’t work properly and it was an alltogether unsatisfactory affair. I think I did it on the cheap basically and although the Xcelorin motor and ESC are fine, the servo and stock receiver are less good.
So, I have today resurrected the project and ordered a SR3500 receiver for my Spektrum transmitter, in an effort to eliminate any interference from crystals etc. Next step is a JR SM22 servo but that will have to come from the US I think.
Does anyone have any experience of this sort of upgrade? I’d love to hear from you – I’ll be posting my upgrade experience on here very soon.

6 Nov 2009OK here’s the deal. I’ve recently signed up for Typekit, and new technology that allows you to embed fonts into your own website. The site is currently invitation only and I’ve got 5 invites to give away. To get one of the 5 invites, please add a comment to this post and I will send on a first come, first served basis. You’ll also need a twitter account and you’ll need to tweet the following:
“5 Typekit invites available @mcollinson”

30 Oct 2009Well, good old Firefox has just autoupdated to 3.5.4 on my Windows 7 Home Premium system and when it fired back up guess what? Yep, its gone and broken all my add-ons and whats more, when you try to install new ones, you get an error like so:
Firefox could not install the file at
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/2108/stylish-1.0.7-fx+tb+sm.xpi
because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.
-203
Then, the Addons box gets frozen and the only way to close it is through Task Manager.
Looking on the forums and blogs, it seems like I’m not the only one with this error and it begs the question, how much have you tested this Mozilla? Most people just want their browser to work, they dont expect and auto-update to break things. I’m getting fed up of Firefox, it’s bloated now and slow – I think I may defect to Chrome.

31 Aug 2009Finally, my new web design site is up and running. Bamboo-Media.co.uk is my web design and marketing company and over the last few years, I’ve designed sites for advertising companies, Interior Design, windows and conservatory companies and schools. I’ve designed the new site to have a fresh, clean contemporary feel and I think the design works well but I’d love any feedback.

28 Aug 2009I’ve been designing websites for a few years now, from personal pages, to CMS sites for schools and corporate pages for clients. I’ve used lots of sofware over the years, from Dreamweaver to StyleMaster and so on. They all help enormously but ultimately, to get the site finished, you end up hand coding CSS style sheets and creating your own artwork. I’ve resorted to using templates from various online template stores, but often these end up looking generic or not fit for purpose. And you end up changing them that much to make them unique that often its easier to start from scratch.
The, I cam across a review of a new piece of software, in PC Pro, on sale now. The software is called Artisteer and having downloaded and played with the demo, I’ve been left that impressed I’ve taken the plunge and bought the full package.
This software is seriously brilliant for any web designer and I guarantee will save hours. It starts of by suggesting themes for you and if this sounds weird or limiting then I suggest you try it for yourself. Once you settle on a theme, you can go about changing any aspect of that theme, be it header, footer, layout, etc etc, all by a fantastic GUI and not a style sheet in sight. To make things even more awesome, the standard package allows you to export your carefully crafted template to Wordpress, Joomla, DotNetNuke or even Drupal.
I’ve only been working with Artisteer for a few hours but I’ve seen enough to make me realise that this could change the lives for many web designers, or even amateurs who want to design their own site but don’t know where to start.
Artisteer gets my vote for software of the year.
*****UPDATE*******
Artisteer now also creates templates for Blogger too.

27 Aug 2009OK, here it is – my fully converted Mini-T. What started out as a bog standard Mini-T (with some alloy upgrades), has finally been converted into a full 1/16 buggy, thanks, to Exotek and their MXB Pro chassis kit. It’s cost me more than I would like, but now it’s done, I’m so happy with it. At it’s heart, it has a Tekin Mini Rage ESC and brushless motor and a Trakpower 11.v 3s Lipo battery. I reckon she’s good for 50mph+.
