The Trials and Tribulations Of Michael Collinson

8 Nov 2009My new receiver came yesterday, the Spektrum SR3500 2.4Ghz micro receiver. It costs £60+, which is as much as the original Micro-T cost me in total!! I’ve been very reluctant to part with that kind of money for one part of such a small car, but, bearing in mind the amount I’ve already spent on it and it was undriveable with the Losi 27Mhz transmitter (upgraded for the brushless conversion) I had to give it a try.
By and large, it’s solved most if not all of my problems. The steering is now rock solid, and interference free. I still intend to upgrade the servo to the SM22 at some point but for now, it’s fine. The only problem I now seem to have is the damn thing cutting out every so often. I don’t know if thats down to the ESC overheating or not but it is quite annoying. I’m on the smallest gear, so I don’t know what to do next to resolve it.
Anyone got any ideas?

6 Nov 2009Since I upgraded my Micro-T to brushless, it’s never worked properly. The radio side of things was just so full of interference, the steering didn’t work properly and it was an alltogether unsatisfactory affair. I think I did it on the cheap basically and although the Xcelorin motor and ESC are fine, the servo and stock receiver are less good.
So, I have today resurrected the project and ordered a SR3500 receiver for my Spektrum transmitter, in an effort to eliminate any interference from crystals etc. Next step is a JR SM22 servo but that will have to come from the US I think.
Does anyone have any experience of this sort of upgrade? I’d love to hear from you – I’ll be posting my upgrade experience on here very soon.

27 Aug 2009OK, here it is – my fully converted Mini-T. What started out as a bog standard Mini-T (with some alloy upgrades), has finally been converted into a full 1/16 buggy, thanks, to Exotek and their MXB Pro chassis kit. It’s cost me more than I would like, but now it’s done, I’m so happy with it. At it’s heart, it has a Tekin Mini Rage ESC and brushless motor and a Trakpower 11.v 3s Lipo battery. I reckon she’s good for 50mph+.

21 Mar 2009My Micro-T is now finished. The thing is, I just can’t stop messing with it. Yesterday, I ordered a Xcelorin brushless conversion motor and ESC, together with the required servo and transmitter. With the 2s lipo I already have, it should make it very quick.
Does anyone know how quick these things go when converted to brushless? Would love to hear from anyone that’s already done it.

12 Mar 2009The BBC are reporting that a new, cheap method of manufacturing Lithium batteries, could pave the way for providing batteries that charge in seconds and are at much lower risk of exploding or overheating.
This potentially removes an area for concern for many RC fans. Have a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7938001.stm for more details.
Is this the future for electric RC cars?

18 Feb 2009Just a couple of photos of my GPM aluminium upgrades and the 3Racing graphite chassis, before I commence the upgrades.

18 Feb 2009The slipper clutch and the new ball diff have arrived and I’ve now fitted them to my Mini-T. They’ve made all the difference and the car now is like the proverbial shit off a shovel. I tightened the slipper right up and there’s no slip now at all. I did have problems with the ball diff though. The CVD kept falling out and there’s no way of securing it. I searched the old t’interweb and found that simply cutting off a spring from a biro pen and inserting that inside the CVD provides enough force to stop it from falling out. So all is well and I’m now going to leave it well alone. Finally time to drive it me thinks!!!

18 Feb 2009I’m off on holiday this week as I mentioned earlier. I’ve been reading about the merits of the tiny, tiny Losi Micro-T and they just look like such good fun, I couldn’t help but want one, especially as it nearly completes my Losi collection. Trouble is, they’re just about out of stock everywhere, especially at my usual shops, like ModelSport. Luckily, I had a trip to Morley Models and they just so happened to have one in the window, so I handed over my hard earned cash and I’ve got to say that it’s money well spent. Just how Losi have fitted all their stuff into a car this small is amazing. You really do have to see it to believe it. They’re are of course, so cut backs for a car so cheap, and some of the parts look like they might break very easily. So, as is my usual way, I’ve invested in some good quality alloy upgrades from RCModelimports.com. I order the front and rear arms, some proper oli-filled shockers (amazing ly small!), plus some other knuckles etc etc. Interestingly, I also ordered a graphite chassis conversion from 3Racing. All the upgrades have arrived today, I can’t stress enough just how small these parts are. I can’t wait to get the alloy stuff on there and will post photos as I go but in the meantime, here are some photos of the Micro-T compared to the Mini-T and the bigger MLST 2.

12 Feb 2009I ordered some new CVDs for my Losi Mini-T this week. I wasn’t overlay impresses with the K Factory ones that came with the upgraded aluminium chassis. I googled around a bit and found a company called Titanium Racing, which do a Titanium based CVD. They arrived today and I must say I’m impressed. They seemd. very well made. I’ve taken a photo of the new CVD, alongside the K Factory one. They red one is the Titanium one and the black is from K Factory. I’m just now awaiting the new ball diff and Slipper Gear to come from Models In Motion – they are showing as despatched today. Then, hopefully, I can finally resolve the slipping diff problem. Everything I’ve read says that the standard clutch system is not able to cope with a lipo/brushless setup.
I’ll post another update over the weekend with the results.
****UPDATE*****
I’ve got the CVDs on the car now. I reckon they look pretty good.
