The Trials and Tribulations Of Michael Collinson
In: Techie Stuff| Work
22 Jan 2009This site’s designed around a great bit of software called Wordpress. It’s just a wonderful bit of work, and I recommend it to anyone who’s thinking of doing a blog. Having said that, since it’s early days, its become so much more than just a blog – it’s now pretty much a fully fledged CMS. The new version 2.7 is so easy to use and there’s a multitude of free templates (this site being one as I couldn’t be bothered to do my own), and also plugins, which will extend the functionality of your site. If you dont have any hosting facilities, you can even get your own free blog set up, hosted for you by Wordpress. Just visit Wordpress.org for the download, or Wordpress.com for the hosted version.
If you’re looking for something a bit more powerful though, have a look at Drupal. The site I designed for my school is based on Drupal version 6 and it is a hugely powerful system. Again, it’s open-source and totally free. Because it’s so powerful, the learning curve is much steeper than something like Wordpress and you’ll have to learn about such things as Views and Taxonomy, but if you want a serious CMS system at zero cost, it’s well worth a look.
And No, I don’t work for Wordpress or Drupal.
As well as working for a school, I do websites for a living too. If you want a site at a reasonable price, give me a call. I did the site for my school – I’m quite proud of it too. Check out www.silcoates.org.uk
